The zener diode is used as a Shunt voltage regulator for regulating voltage across small loads. The Zener diode is connected parallel to the load to make it reverse bias, and once the Zener diode exceeds knee voltage, the voltage across the load will become constant.
A Zener diode is a special type of diode designed to operate in the reverse breakdown region. Unlike ordinary diodes, which break down and get damaged in reverse bias, the Zener diode is constructed to allow current to flow in the reverse direction when the reverse voltage exceeds a certain value called the Zener voltage or breakdown voltage.
