Babinet compensator is a precise optical instrument used to study the properties of polarized light. It is typically employed in various optical experiments and applications, particularly in the field of optics, physics, and material science. The Babinet compensator helps in the measurement of optical path differences and is often used for investigating birefringence in materials.Babinet compensator, it first gets polarized. The compensator then separates the light into two components, based on the refractive index of the material for different polarization directions. The compensator can introduce a phase shift between the two components, effectively compensating for differences in the optical path. The result is that the compensator can alter the polarization of light to achieve a specific phase relationship between the components.
Babinet compensator is a versatile and essential tool in optical research, offering high precision for the measurement and analysis of polarized light and birefringent materials. Whether for fundamental research or practical applications, it plays a significant role in exploring the behavior of light in complex optical systems. The instrument consists of two - round scales. One with index and the other with vernier. The first scale (index scale) is for tuning the analyser into the azymuth. The Second scale (Vernier Scale) is for measuring the degree of orientation of a wedge box.The Wedge Box contains two wedges cut in mutually perpendicular direction of optics axis in quartz. The long wedge is movable by means of a micrometer drum, with the help of which accurate reading of the movement is taken. Micrometer screw minimum reading 0.001cm. (i.e. Least count)Experiment To analyse elliptically-polarised light by means of Babinets compensatorBabinet compensator, white light source, quarter wave plate, chock power supply, box polariod eye piece, reding lens, plumb line.
